  • KATY GUNN: EP

    KATY GUNN: EP

Katy Gunn's self-titled EP is a charming mix of Feist-y pop, Amy Winehouse's sass, and Fiona Apple's moody melodic sensibility. Upright bass mixes with trip hop drum beats and Gunn's deftly layered vocal harmonies on the wonderfully sparse "Consequences", while tasteful drum machines and string hits accentuate the Regina Spektor-ish pop of "Out of Touch," while she sings of being unimpressed by certain types of people she meets. On "Inside Me", sparkly keyboards give way to a double-time bass drum dancefloor track. Harpsichord, handclaps and vibraphone fill "All the People," while she sings of her questions about God with delightful harmonies that call to mind Pet Sounds-era Beach Boys. It's pretty, exquisite pop that's a pure pleasure to listen to. Give it a listen and you'll agree.

  • JOHNNY OTIS: Blues and Swing Party

JOHNNY OTIS: Blues and Swing Party

A true legend in his own time, Johnny Otis is a member of the Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame, and the Rock & Roll hall of fame, and had his first hit record in 1945. Throughout his lengthy career in the music industry, he discovered artists like Jackie Wilson, Big Mama Thornton, and Etta James, and his son is 70's guitar hero Shuggie Otis, who appears on many songs throughout this compilation. This album features a wide selection of swing, blues and R&B tracks from the past 50 years of Johnny Otis' career as a singer, pianist and drummer, and serves as a brief lesson in the history and progression of R&B and it's transition into rock & roll, with songs like "Shake, Rattle & Roll" and "Stack-O-Lee". And while all the songs on the album might not be standards (yet), they certainly showcase Johnny Otis' rich and varied contributions to pop music.

  • CLINTON JORDAN: Arrivals and Departures

    CLINTON JORDAN: Arrivals and Departures

It's not uncommon to hear albums that are simply an unfocused journey through various contemporary styles of music: here's a rock song, here's a pop song, there's an R&B song. But it's truly rare to find an album (such as this) that is so focused and united in its genre-blending sound, yet hard to classify. There's the Outkast-ish "Supa Man", which makes dancing irresistable; a few songs later, there's the jazzy chromatic electric piano & frantic gospel drums holding down the looped groove on "Waiting". Then there's the dancey Justin Timberlake-with-funkier-beats of "Your Ways". The prog rock workout of "Monsters" sounds like Tool with a choir of Freddy Mercurys singing; it's fascinating stuff. As a whole, it's a concept album, dealing with arriving on earth and getting to heaven in the end. The musical journey on which it takes the listener is a wild and wonderful ride, made up of excellent musicianship, stellar singing, and first rate production that places the sound firmly in 2008, while still keeping an eye on the history of soul, rock and R&B music. It's a good thing to hear an album that blends genres so seamlessly. With 24 tracks and almost 80 minutes of music, the album is a thorough exploration of ecstatic gospel, R&B, and pop styles, and at the end, you'll want to take it again.

  • DANI LOVE: Dani Love: The EP

DANI LOVE: Dani Love: The EP

She describes her style as "Neo-Jazz," but when you get done listening to this EP, you'll realize that classification only begins to scrape the surface. Over the course of these seven tracks, Love proves that she's adept at seemingly any style you throw at her: soul, smooth funk, straight up R&B, and even hip hop. And while the diversity of the music here is certainly noteworthy, it's her voice that deserves the majority of the accolades. It's one thing to be able to command a track with your vocal skills, but it's another to be able to seemingly convert complex, well-done backing tracks to bit player level once the singing starts. Her smooth (I can't stress that enough) delivery manages to both maintain composure and emote exponentially, taking the hard-hitting kick drum on a track like "What You Made" and soothing its harshest aspects with her layered harmonies. "That's All" is a sparse, piano laced pop jam that looks toward the bright side, while "Get Away" is a slyly crafted he said/she said R&B bouncer that gives Love a chance to show off her rap skills. She steps up to the occasion on both tracks, keeping the lyrics and the melodies sharp and on point. It's that strength and precision that flows through this whole album and makes it one to look out for.

  • THE GUMBO BROTHERS: Funky Freedom

    THE GUMBO BROTHERS: Funky Freedom

This collection of swampy funk is deep in the pocket, right where it should be. The grooves are thick, the vocals are sparse and always add texture to the interplay between the musicians, and the vibes never get bogged down. For a four piece, they crank out a surprisingly full sound, complementing the bass and drums with organ, electric piano, saxophone, and some slick percussion. The lyrics and vocals are pure party soul, designed to get you in tune with the vibe and flow of the music. Songs like "Booty Movin'" give you even more than what you might expect: A tight drum beat, accented with driving organ and guitar that place the listener smack dab in the middle of some wild vocals and a full on groove that splits open for a fantastic sax solo. The Gumbo Brothers say they're "going to hit you with some ass-shakin' funk!" They got that right. Prepare yourself.
