LONI ROSE: The Shine Sessions
If you like your country pop with catchy but personal songs, and with guitar licks sweeter than pumpkin pie, then look no further. Loni Rose has already had her songs featured in movies like American Pie and Lovewrecked, and in TV showes such as The Hills and America's Next Top Model. Often recalling such luminaries as Sheryl Crow or Lucinda Williams, Rose's soulful, clear voice is immediately engaging and she can turn on the gentle rasp when she wants. She's quite deft with melodies and knows just when to throw in the unexpected chord change that keep the songs rewarding on each repeated listen. This is high quality guitar pop/rock with a country edge and top notch playing and production.

RUSTY YORK: Sings Country Like Crazy
They sure don't make albums that sound like this any more. Rusty York is an old timer, and this album was recorded about 45 years ago. Listening to it is a bit like getting into a time machine; you can hear the pop and hiss of the vinyl, from which this album was apparently transferred. This album presents a great look at the old-time country and western, rock and roll, and rockabilly for which Rusty York became a member of the Rockabilly Hall of Fame, and played the Grand Ole Opry. The charm and nostalgia of this album can't help but infect your bones and warm your heart, or even break it, on a few songs. As the album's liner notes modestly claim, he's "a boy whose ability to pick, sing and write country music is as natural as the sun coming up in the morning." And that claim isn't exaggerated. He's got a great voice, a little like Bobby Darin or other teen idols of the early 60s, but he operates in the country/western milieu, with great success. Just pop this album into your car stereo, roll the windows down, and let Rusty's easy-going, heartfelt songs be your soundtrack; it's a great experience. For country music lovers, it's an essential and admirable look at the genre's history.

NEPTUNE QUARTET: Neptune Quartet
Neptune Quartet are a countrified jazz acoustic band who make magic happen with the subtlest of musical notions. "My Summer of '42" is built around a sparse loop of an acoustic guitar strumming one chord. As the song progresses, cello, mandolin, and some tastefully effected, almost psychedelic electric guitar all fill in the gaps and the song builds both dynamically and melodically. A bit later, we find the 9 minute epic "Kong", a group improvisation inspired by Frank Zappa. There's no hot-dogging or showboating, musically, just the tasteful and appropriate performances from the capable players in the band. Of course, "I Can't Get Started" is sure to be recognized by lovers of the American songbook, and Wes Ivankovich provides a suitably Billie Holiday-influenced vocal delivery. The album has an even mix of originals and covers which fit seemlessly alongside each other. Gershwin, Duke Ellington, Hank Williams, and Tom Waits are all excellent company for the gypsy jazz/folky bluegrass/swing numbers written by the Neptune Quartet themselves. The inclusion of cello and occasional electric guitars combined with the genre hopping from old-timey country to American standards, to jazz and bluegrass really make this group and this album a delightful listen and keep the listener engaged and curious about what new styles and sonic textures await them from song to song. This is wonderful music from a talented bunch who aren't afraid to make daring musical choices.

JOE FOURNIER: Whiskey Stars
Whiskey soaked bar brawls, swapping bawdy stories on the back porch, pushing an old beat up pickup down a country road alongside the swamp - these are the images conjured by the wonderfully raucous songs on Whiskey Stars. It's swampy, bluesy countrified Americana, and has the best kind of lusty, disheveled swagger. The production of the album is totally professional, but that doesn't take away from the raw, ragged hangdog fun of the album. It's a joy to listen to him sing about losing all his possessions; the lowdown baritone guitar tones vividly evoke the blues in his broken heart. "Deluxe Ride" has a loose, wild, slow-mo rockabilly flavor (think early Elvis), while "Almost Got it Made" name-checks Creedence Clearwater Revival outright. "Darlene Don't" is reminiscent of the moody, nuanced work of latter-day Elvis Costello, in a good way. It's great to come across an album that hits just the right amount of nostalgia, yet tells new stories and brings new sounds to the fore. This is great, country fried rock and roll, done right. Damn right.

THE MICAH WALK BAND: Bright Side Fantasy
The polished, slightly melancholy sound of "Bright Side Fantasy" begins with the enchanting, well-crafted ballad "Goodbye Austin", which is enough to make anyone stop and listen. But the tightly rhythmic pop rock of "Come On Mary" is something sure to get stuck in your head and make you come back to listen again and again. Seriously. It's a catchy, highly melodic tune and it still rocks your ass; it wouldn't sound out of place on Wilco's "Summerteeth". Walk's vocals are really great: strong and clear, yet with a hint of the grit that makes Ryan Adams' voice so alluring. However, the band is quite good in their own right. Every song has tightly crafted accents and nuances that draw you in and keep you interested. The lead guitar work is especially intriguing, like on the solo for "Above Water", or the subtle lead part of "Late Nights". To cap it all off, this album was self-produced, which is really cool, because the album sounds amazing and totally professional. The Micah Walk Band's songs have a way of weaving themselves into your subconscious, so you'll find yourself singing them days later and not even realize how they got there. This is a wonderful album from a band that's destined for greatness.
