notes

Miss Wanda Johnson, born in 1963 in the South Carolina 'Piedmont' region, is a sparkling addition to the deep Southern blues & roots tradition.

Wanda is a gifted singer (and natural songwriter) whose charisma comes through loud & clear on this provocative debut.

Recorded in one steamy summer night in a studio in rural South Carolina, "Call Me Miss Wanda" was cut live with virtually no overdubs. Backed by the band of Shrimp City Slim, Wanda applies her heart-melting vocals to a collection of poetic original songs. This set includes "The River", "Switch Me Over (to Love)", "Finally Home", "If I Rise in the Morning", and other gems from her live show.

"I'm Through With You" was used in a North American TV/radio ad campaign for Curves For Women (2005).

"Finally Home" is on the soundtrack of the hit TV show "Army Wives" on the Lifetime channel (episode #EP-302, airing June 14, 2009).

Many of these songs are now in regular rotation on XM Satellite Radio's "Bluesville" station. Since the release of this CD, Wanda & her band have toured France, Italy, played the Chicago Blues Festival, Pocono Blues Festival, Lake Eden Arts Festival, and other major events.

Anyone who loves a top-notch female singer will be delighted with the purchase of this remarkable CD.

  • What a voice!
    author: Blues Lover, Chicago

We first heard Wanda on Bluesville, the XM radio station. What a revelation - the cleanest, strongest, clearest female voice I've heard in a long time. Add a sense of humor and some fine arrangements, and every cut on this album is a gem. (Side note: I fear that the album cover sends the wrong message - it looks like an old, classic blues album cover rather than the cover of a modern, hip, uptempo blues album. but then again, as they say, you should never judge an album by its cover)

  • I'm Through With You

One of my favorite blues person. I saw her in Charleston, very likeable and wonderful singer. I will follow her music.

  • A very impressive debut from a talented and imaginative vocalist
    author: David Whiteis (Living Blues)

Johnson's voice has a unique dry-timbred intensity, rich vibrato, and tonal warmth in the upper registers... gospel-infused, spiritually refreshing, blues-noir, rollicking...a very impressive debut from a talented and imaginative vocalist.

  • A future star in the making
author: Dave Williams (Juke Blues, UK)

Talent is a precious commodity and it soon becomes apparent that Wanda Johnson has plenty. She possesses an appealing singing voice with a rare diction clarity...clever, sophisticated lyrics...a future star in the making.

This debut CD from Wanda Johnson is strongly recommended. She's got a great voice and is a versatile singer offering us a mix of blues/soul/jazz. My favourites on this CD are the self-penned The river and the funky opener Can you handle this?. I hope to hear more from Wanda Johnson really soon.
