notes

This collaboration marks the reunion of two dedicated Bluesmen.

Slapback Jack and Bad Voodoo played together some 30 years ago and this reunion sees them performing better than ever.

They have introduced a unique and subtle style of humor to their music, by downplaying the "Bad Times...Sad Times", sometimes associated with the Blues, and adding a lighter-side tone to this much respected genre.

Many Blues styles are covered in this album, including Electric and Acoustic influences from Texas all the way down to the Mississippi Delta and the Louisiana swamps.

You'll hear a mix of Blues Harmonica's, Acoustic Jumbo's, Telecasters, Dobro's, Acoustic and Electric Basses, and the ever present "Low Down, Gruff and Gritty" smoke stained, whiskey soaked voice of Slapback Jack.

"Pass the Jack, let's git gruff and play some Blues!!"

I have been looking for a sound close to the late John Campbell, these ole boys have a kickin ass CD and have soothed the sound I was looking for quite some time. Wicked sound, Wicked voice, Wicked songs, Wicked guitar, Voodoo for sure. I love to play "Bluesman with a callin" over and over.

  • The Dennis Hays Podcast Interview with the artists brings a whole new dimension
    author: Brian Walsh

I bought the album after hearing some of the songs as downladable MP3 files and enjoyed them enough to buy the album. I visited the Houndawg music site and found the Podcast interview with Dennis Hays which adds a completely different perspecitve to the musicians, the music and it's roots. Not only was it very educational, but it gave me a much better appreciation of the music and lyrics!

  • REAL GRITTY STYLE OF BLUES
    author: ANTHONY JAY

I consider myself quite well versed in appeciation of the blues and this album takes the genre to a whole new level. The songs are witty, informative and certainly held my attention right to the end.Slapback Jack has a great earthbound quality to his voice and the Guitar playing of BadVoodoo is about as good as it gets. You gotta add this album to your collection. AJ

    author: J. Olson

I have heard these guy's on various download sites. They were always on or around the top positions, but when I heard this cd, it gave their music a whole new dimension in quality and gruffness. This is one I will listen to and enjoy for a long time.

  • Get Back, Slapback
    author: JB

I like most kinds of music, from country…all the way down; but I must admit that “blues” was not at the top of my “like list” when I first received a copy of this album as a gift. Then I popped it into my CD player one afternoon as I headed home from work. From the beginning to the end of the album, I heard some great grinin’ and toe tapin’ sounds. Gruff Side Of The Blues contains soul-felt story telling accompanied by some amazing guitar. I also appreciated the variety and mix of songs that, like a well-paced movie, had me eager for the next track as soon as one ended. Blues has moved up my like list now, at least the “gruff side.” Okay Slapback, let’s hear another one.
