notes
Songwriter/keyboardist/singer Shrimp City Slim and crew epitomize the genre known as the "Lowcountry blues", a rollicking blend of groovy shuffles, coastal funk, and swampy ballads that reflects the multi-cultural heritage of their home base, Charleston, SC.
"I Work Nights", Shrimp City Slim's fifth all-original CD released in 1998, documents a fascinating period in the artist's career.
At this point in time, the band was a sextet with two women singers (Ann Caldwell - now making her own name as "First Lady of Charleston Jazz" www.anncaldwell.com - and Pearl Smith) up front. Jerome Griffin had moved from bass back to the drums and Chuck "The Cat" Morris (harmonica) became a regular member of the live band. Silent Eddie Phillips (guitars) and Shrimp City Slim (keys) of course anchored the group. And everyone in the band sang.
"I Work Nights" contains twenty (20) clever original songs including "Charleston Strut", "Hey Mr. DJ", the first version of "Switch Me Over (To Love)" (sung here by Ann; now a show-stopper for Wanda Johnson), "The Grass Is Greener", "Stick & Stay","Color Me Indigo", and more.
An important slice of Lowcountry music history...we think you will love this album.

Twenty originals, smoothly performed
author: Rich Schneider (Blues Beat)"I Work Nights"...he certainly does, days, too! His latest CD offers 20 catchy originals displaying a potpourri of styles, moods and rhythms. They're all smoothly performed by his splendid combo, obviously welded tight by considerable seasoning.
An enjoyable trip through more genres than you can count
author: Blues AccessCharleston band uses blues as only part of their schtick...an enjoyable trip through more genres than you can count.
Shrimp City Slim makes records that sound like nobody else
author: Paul Lewis (Blues & Rhythm, UK)Shrimp City Slim makes records like nobody else, certainly nobody working largely in the blues field..clearly a songwriter of great individuality and real skill. "I Work Nights" is not a record for the purist or the casual listener. It will repay repeated plays however, but I warn you that if you give it enough time and attention, it will hook you real, real bad. Personally, at the moment, I can't play anything else.
