notes

Deep soul searching to humorous blues and roots R & B is served up by singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Michael Peloquin.

Michael is an established West Coast blues and R&B horn section arranger and harmonica & saxophone soloist.

After years as a contributing sideman to other artists (Albert King, Johnnie Johnson, Tommy Castro, Chris Cain, Mitch Woods, E.C. Scott, Larry "Arkansas" Davis, Rhythmtown-Jive & Sy Klopps), he is stepping into the spotlight with his first album as a leader.

These years have been an education in American roots music that has helped to form his melting-pot sound, as witnessed on this project.

Nine originals and two covers (one from Delbert McClinton), take the listener on an American Roots R&B journey that is sure to satisfy.

The songs feature poignant lyrics, tight grooves, big brassy horn arrangements all topped off by soulful, smooth and innovative harmonica work.

In Germany he won the Gold Medal in the 1997 International Harmonica Festival and Competition. Michael is an endorsee of Hohner Harmonicas.

Special guests: Tommy Castro, Mitch Woods, and Steve Freund

"This cat blows! Check it out!"
-Norton Buffalo

Michael is a soulful sax player and arranger, encompassing many styles. He has a harmonica style all his own. I'm happy to be a part of his first solo effort.
-Tommy Castro

...blown away by his horn playing...the harmonica came out and it was all over...a rare CD where you want to play it all!
-Stewart Strauss, KTHX-FM, Reno, NV

Fine songcraft...he's one sideman who deserves to be front and center.
-Blues Revue

...fantastic recording...smooth West Coast vocals, fat sax playing and in-the-pocket harp work

  • House of Cards
    author: Wendy Nelson

Nine of the eleven tunes are written by Michael Peloquin. I bought the album for the harmonica music & I'm very satisfied. There are eight tunes with strong harmonica & a great mixture of genres keeps it interesting. Michael's vocals & sax playing greatly enhance the listening pleasure of this album.

Mike is the consumate musician as well as blues artist. This is a perfect mix for a term I like to use called rockin' rhythm n' blues with excellent harmonica work and horn arrangements. After you hear this, a three piece power section just won't do.

  • Awesome

Solid arrangements of very original well written songs. Harmonica fits in with horn section seamlessly. Big band sound with mordern production qualities. Michael Peloquin is a good songwriter, as well as an excellent instrumentalist (sax and Harp). Title cut one of my favorites. Tasteful solos all the way around. Sincerely,Chris Mastakas

  • Tasty and well-played

Everything to like: nice original take on the blues, great harp sounds, horn arrangements, good songwriting. Yes indeed.

  • Great find. Intense and addictive sound.

As a member of the South Florida Blues Society, I add this CD and artist to my list of great finds. The harp is intense, the sax is awesome. The lyrics are more than twenty three kinds of fine. And, maybe he is family?

"I really enjoyed this CD. As a debut I find it up there with many of the current top player's releases on big Blues labels(if there is such a thing). Michael's originality, arrangement, choice of players & musical talent is highlighted on this CD in a top notch way.You can tell the care that was put into this project." -Mark Hummel

  • Buy this CD. Its a must have!!
    author: Steve M

Michaels put his years of experience together as a writer, arranger, player and vocalist to create one of the best R&B influenced CD's I've heard in a long time. His harmonica playing alone sets this CD apart. Each track is creative, and very tastefully versed. One listen and you'll hear the playing that earned him the title of 1997 Hohner World Champion. Theres only a handful of harp players that can overblow this instrument the way he does. And then he rips up the sax and vocals too!!! Amazing. This CD should be in everyones collection. Its always on the top of mine.

  • This is a kick ass CD
    author: Linda Maria

You have to add Michael Peloquin's HOUSE OF CARDS to your collection. This is a kick ass CD. Really, I bought this CD for the great sax, harp playin' and vocals of Peloquin who is lead vocal on every track. I have admired his playing/vox for about 3 years now. To my joyful surprise, lots of my favorite Bay Area Blues artists are doin' what they do best on every cut! Daniel Castro, Ralph Woodson, Steve Lucky, Ian Wilson, Ira Walker, and Danny Armstrong to name a few. I really like track 3- House of Cards which features the HORNS OF DILEMMA, Tom Poole- trumpet; Danny Armstrong- Trombone, and Peloquin on Baritone Sax. They are so good together! The big band sound - funk R&B for sure here. Michael did a great job producing this CD and he knew what he was doing when he picked the players.
